US President Donald Trump claimed at the White House on Monday that the ongoing government shutdown was the reason he decided to order a variety of fast food to feed the visiting US national champion Clemson Tigers American football team.

"I had a choice. Do we have no food for you? Because we have a shutdown," commented Trump.

Trump explained that he instead made the choice to buy fast food, saying "we bought a 1000 [hamburgers]. Burger King, all American companies, Burger King, Wendy's and McDonald's. We have Big Macs, quarter pounders with cheese, we have everything that I like."

The president reportedly paid for the food, which was served on White House china and silverware, out of his own pocket.

The ongoing partial US government shutdown became the longest in history on Saturday and is now entering its 24th day. The shutdown began on December 22 2018 and was sparked by Trump's refusal to sign any funding bill that did not include money to build a wall along the US-Mexico border, one of his key campaign pledges.
